Winter in Traverse City, keep it clean!

1/31/2015

It's the dead of winter in northern Michigan.  It's the time of year that can make the most devout Traverse area resident question their sanity for living here.   And not only is this time of year hard on us, it's also hard on our floors!  Carpet, tile, wood floors, they all take a beating as we track in dirt, salt, snow, sand and who knows what else.   But you can protect your investment and keep a clean house this time of year.   It just takes a little more work.   And since you'll be spending more time indoors anyways you might as well make your home a little more bearable to be confined in.

Your first defense to incoming debri is a good entrance mat.  Not only will this help keep your home cleaner, but it will also reduce the amount of work you have to do in cleaning.   Also, make a habit of picking up your entrance mat and shaking it out every once in awhile.  Remember, it can only do it's job if it's semi clean itself.

But for the debri that does make it in you will need to sweep, vaccum, sweep, vaccum, and sweep some more.   It really can't be said enough.  The longer sand, salt, and dirt is allowed on your floors the more damage it's doing.  It's perhaps most obvious when it comes to the damage done to wood floors, but carpet can really take a beating as well.  Carpet is made from many individual fibers wound tightly together.  These fibers can get scratched to the point that even when cleaned professionally they will still look worn and dirty to the eye.   Don't allow this damage to occur in the first place.

But what about the debri that originates in your home?  Dust, pet hair, fireplace ash, and airborne oils from cooking, all can have a negative effect on your flooring and can be worse in the winter when our homes are closed up tight.  One way to limit negative effects from these indoor pollutants is to make sure you're keeping up on your furnace filter changes.   But inevitably many of these will end up in your homes biggest air filter which isn't in your furnace, it's on your floors.  That's right, your carpet filters the air in your home and once again needs regular vacuuming to remove as much as possible.

In the end, we know that whether the groundhog sees his shadow or not Spring is around the corner.   (The corner might not be March, perhaps April, or May?)  And when we emerge and it's time for a deep overall cleanse of your home, don't forget to call Pristine Floor Care to clean your carpet.  We will help send the last bits of winter packing... at least until next year.

Carpet Cleaning might not be rocket science, but there is a method to the madness.
